Bette Davis returns as the unhinged heroine whose beauty and sanity are fading into the dank, fragrant air of Hollywood’s fantasy Deep South, where the actress triumphed long ago as the indomitable Jezebel and the most arrogant of the Little Foxes. Yet times have changed, and Classical Hollywood's more polite innuendos of cruelty have crumbled to unleash the dark and sadistic forces that now ensnare Davis and perfume Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte with a feverish intensity and strangeness. Charlotte is living alone as a virtual recluse in the Hollis mansion, tended by Velma (Agnes Moorehead) her housekeeper.

Shortly after, John is ambushed and decapitated in the summerhouse by an assailant with a cleaver. Charlotte returns to the house in a bloodstained dress, which all of the guests witness. Martin Scorsese’s 3.5 hour movie about the Osage tribe who were murdered over the span of years, was adapted from a book by David Grann who researched the true story. The next day, the authorities escort Charlotte from home, as a crowd gathers around to observe the spectacle. Charlotte receives an envelope from Mr. Willis, which he received from Jewel (who died of a stroke after hearing of the incident which occurred on the previous night), ostensibly confessing to the murder of her husband John. As the authorities leave with Charlotte, she looks back at the house.

Upon returning, Miriam renews her relationship with Drew Bayliss, the local doctor who jilted her after the murder. The eccentric Charlotte becomes progressively wilder with Miriam's arrival--her nights haunted by mysterious piano playing of the song Mayhew wrote for her and by the appearance of Mayhew's disembodied hand and head. Miriam and Drew trick Charlotte into shooting Drew with a gun loaded with blanks, and Miriam helps Charlotte dispose of the body in a swamp. Drew's reappearance later reduces Charlotte to whimpering insanity.

Farrell and Heller won a 1965 Edgar Award, from the Mystery Writers of America, for Best Motion Picture Screenplay. The title song became a hit for Patti Page, who took it to #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. The film's seven Oscar nominations were the most for a movie of the horror genre up to that time.
Charlotte's sanity deteriorates with Miriam's arrival, her nights haunted by a mysterious harpsichord playing the song Mayhew wrote for her and by the appearance of Mayhew's disembodied hand and head. Suspecting that Miriam and Drew are after Charlotte's money, Velma seeks help from Mr. Willis (Cecil Kellaway), an insurance investigator who is still interested in the Mayhew case and has visited Mayhew's ailing widow, Jewel (Mary Astor). Miriam fires Velma, who later returns to discover Charlotte has been drugged. Velma plans to expose Miriam's exploitation of Charlotte, but Miriam hits Velma with a chair and she falls down the stairs to her death.

This glorious melodramatic chiller follows a Southern woman’s (Davis) mysterious descent into madness after the return of her cousin (de Havilland). The main story swings to the present, again in the mansion where Davis lives alone with her memories which threaten to destroy her.

It struck me as though she was determined to outdo Davis’s histrionics but without a hint of her subtlety. The rest of the cast, particularly Davis and de Havilland, almost make up for this. ‘She’s not really crazy,’ Sheriff Luke Standish explains to the workers’ foreman (George Kennedy). ‘She just acts that way because people seem to expect it of her.’ Not everybody in the local parish would agree with this assessment, though. He gives her ten days to vacate the mansion, or she’ll be summoned to court.
De Havilland, as her cousin, lives very much for the present – and future – as she attempts to soothe and rationalize with the deeply emotional mistress of the house. When Joan Crawford took sick and was hospitalized as filming began (see above), scenes were shot around her, but when it became evident that she would have to be replaced, her role was offered to Katharine Hepburn and Vivien Leigh. Charlotte is soon joined by her rather more urbane cousin Miriam, who she somehow imagines will be able to magically solve her eviction nightmare.
Believing Charlotte completely mad and secure in her room, Miriam and Drew go into the garden to discuss what they have done. As Miriam embraces Drew, she looks up to see Charlotte, who has overheard them, push a huge stone urn from the balcony above, crushing them to death. Later, as Charlotte is taken away by the authorities, Willis hands her an envelope from the now-dead Jewel Mayhew; it contains Jewel's confession of the murder of her husband. John is then brutally murdered and decapitated in the summerhouse with a cleaver, with one hand severed. She returns traumatized to the party in a bloody dress, and most of the guests assume Charlotte is the murderer. His sharp words were not enough to tank Davis' project though. Despite the tabloid talk about the way Crawford was replaced after barely a week on set, Davis and co-stars were not overshadowed by the gossip. Quite the opposite, reviews for their work praised the daring nature of their performances, as well as Aldrich's directing style. Davis lives in the reflection of a dreadful past, the macabre murder and mutilation of her married lover hanging over her as she frequently confuses the past with the present as her mental balance is threatened.
On the night of the ball, Mayhew jilts Charlotte and then, in a moment of Hitchcockian horror, someone takes a cleaver to his hand and then his head. The killer’s identity isn’t revealed but the next time we see Charlotte, her white ballgown is covered in a big splodge of blood. The gathering collectively suspects she is the killer, but she is never convicted of the crime.
